About Reciprocal Borrowing Programs

The Darling Library's mission is to serve the information and research needs of the HIU community. Our main goal is to support the curriculum at Hope. However, in the event that the Darling Library does not have the material(s) you need, besides the Interlibrary Loan service, Hope maintains agreements with a number of other libraries that allow Hope students, staff, and/or faculty to check out and return books at participating libraries.

Patrons from participating libraries may also apply for borrowing privileges at Hope.

The Darling Library participates in the following Reciprocal Borrowing Programs. See details below.

The Agreement with CSUF

The Darling Library of Hope International University has made the following agreement with the Pollak Library of California State University, Fullerton for reciprocal borrowing.

  • Both Libraries will allow borrowing based upon an officially signed letter.
  • All privileges will apply for one semester. A new letter is needed for each semester to verify current status.
  • Payment of outstanding fines and fees.
    • Approximately two weeks before the end of each semester each library will send notification of unpaid fines by the other’s guest patrons.
    • In the event that a guest patron does not pay the fines by a specified date, each library agrees to pay those fines to the host institution or the guest institution will provide any assistance required for the host institution to pursue payment (i.e., providing the Social Security Number for the Franchise Tax Board).
  • Revisions of this policy. This policy may be revised with a formal agreement between the appropriate authorities from both libraries.

July 24, 2006, Robin Hartman, Director of Library Services, Darling Library, Elizabeth Housewright, Acting Associate University Librarian, Pollak Library and Ron Rodriguez, Access Services Unit Head, Pollak Library met to discuss the authorization letter and the continuation of the reciprocal borrowing agreement between the two schools. The letter and procedures were revised.

Who is Eligible?

HIU students, faculty, and staff in good standing with the Darling Library may apply for borrowing privileges at the  Pollack Library at California State University Fullerton.

 How Does It Work?

  1. Request an authorization letter at the Circulation Desk of the Darling Library. We will verify that you are in good standing with the Darling Library and issue a letter of authorization which will expire at the end of the current term. A new letter is required each term.
  2. Present the authorization letter along with your Hope ID card to the CSUF Pollak Library circulation desk.

NOTE: Access to the Pollack Library research databases is available on a first come, first served basis at certain guest computers in the library; remote access to their research databases is restricted to CSUF students, faculty and staff.

Outstanding fines and fees

In the event that HIU patrons do not pay fines due at the Pollak Library, the Darling Library will notify the business office to add the fee to the student accounts and send a check for the total amount of outstanding fines and fees to the Pollak Library.

CSUF students and faculty should refer to the Pollak Library Reciprocal Borrowing policies and procedures for borrowing from HIU.

SCATLA Cooperative Borrowing Program

HIU is a full member of the the Southern California Theological Library Association. SCATLA promotes and supports cooperative efforts among theological libraries in Southern California including a cooperative borrowing program. "This is a referral service that permits, on a case by case basis, screened clients at one library to use the collections at another library during the course of a defined research project."

Who is Eligible?

The SCATLA cooperative borrowing program is intended for faculty and students at the graduate level in religion or theology programs. HIU students in masters level programs and faculty may apply for SCATLA cards.

How Does It Work?

  1. HIU students and faculty may apply for a SCATLA card at the Darling Library.
  2. We will verify that you are a patron in good standing with the Darling Library and arrange for you to have a short interview with a librarian regarding your research needs before issuing a SCATLA card.
  3. SCATLA cards are assigned an expiration date based upon the research project and will not exceed one year.
  4. A specific SCATLA card is required for use at each lending library.
  5. Present your SCATLA card along with your current HIU ID card at the participating lending library.
  6. Check out books and other materials from the host library according to their lending policies.

  • Cooperative Borrowing = An agreement between participating institutions to lend books to each other's eligible patrons.
  • Lending Library = The library that owns and lends out books.
  • Local Lending Rules = Policies that govern a library's lending practices -- what may be borrowed, the length of circulation period, limits on the number of items borrowed, and the levying of fines.
  • Participating Libraries = Libraries that have agreed to participate in a particular agreement such as the SCATLA Cooperative Borrowing Program.
  • Patrons = Registered members, authorized users, or regular "customers" of a library.

ACL Reciprocal Borrowing Program

Hope participates in the Association of Christian Librarians Reciprocal Borrowing Program. 

This is a voluntary program whereby participating ACL institutions extend in-person borrowing privileges to authorized patrons from other ACL institutions. Patrons, including faculty, students, and staff, have reciprocal access to the physical collections of participating Christian institutions.

This access is especially valuable for online students who may not live near their home institution.

Atla Reciprocal Borrowing Program

Hope participates in the American Theological Library Association Reciprocal Borrowing Program. Atla is an association of graduate seminaries and university graduate level programs in ministry, Biblical Studies, religion, and theology in North America.

NOTE: This program is for online graduate students in the areas of Religious Studies, Biblical Studies, and Ministry at participating Atla member institutions throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Who is eligible?

Hope students in masters level programs in ministry, Biblical studies, religion, and theology are eligible to use this service. Some participating libraries will also lend to undergraduate students and faculty. Contact the Darling Library at (714) 879-3901, ext. 1234 or [email protected] for more information.
