IEALC Reciprocal Borrowing Program

  The Agreement with IEALC

HIU is a participating member of the Inland Empire Academic Libraries Cooperative. The purpose of the IEALC is to provide reciprocal library borrowing privileges to currently registered students of the participating institutions. Local lending rules at each participating lending library, including limits on the number of items borrowed and the levying of fines, shall apply to the borrowing of materials from that library. (Faculty and staff borrowing privileges are outside of this Agreement.)

 How Does it work?

Permission is granted by your home library to borrow from any participating lending library according to their local lending rules.

How it works:

  1. HIU students may request an IEALC card at the Darling Library. 
  2. Upon verification that you are a patron in good standing with the Darling Library and after a short interview with a librarian regarding your research needs, you may be issued a card.
  3. Present your IEALC card along with your current HIU student ID card to the Circulation Desk of any IEALC "lending" library. (See list of participating institutions.)
    1. Check books out from the lending library.
    2. Return books to the lending library.
    3. Pay any overdue fines to the lending library.
  4. A new IEALC card is required each school term.

 Who is Eligible?

Currently registered students of Hope International University who are in good standing with the Darling Library. (This does not include HIU faculty and staff.)

GLOSSARY OF TERMS:

  • Home Library = The library of the institution you attend. (Darling Library of Hope International University)
  • Reciprocal Borrowing = An agreement between participating institutions to lend books to each other's eligible patrons.
  • Lending Library = The library that owns and lends out books.
  • Local Lending Rules = Policies that govern a library's lending practices -- what may be borrowed, the length of circulation period, limits on the number of items borrowed, and the levying of fines.
  • Participating Libraries = Libraries that have agreed to participate in a particular agreement such as the IEALC Reciprocal Borrowing Program.
  • Patrons = Registered members, authorized users, or regular "customers" of a library.
