Chicago/Turabian/SBL Style Guide (Notes-Bibliography)

Guide to using the Chicago/Turabian and SBL style manuals.

Biblical Citations

As a general rule, you do not include a citation in the footnote or bibliography for Bible verses referenced in your paper. However, do include a reference, in-text, to the version of the bible you are citing from the first time you cite a passage (ex. NRSV, NIV, NASB etc.).

If you cite from the study notes in your Bible, then you do need to provide a full footnote and bibliography citation for the author of the study note as these are not considered a part of the Bible, and the individual author needs to be given credit. Follow the guidelines for citing a chapter or article from an edited work.
