Chicago/Turabian/SBL Style Guide (Notes-Bibliography)

Guide to using the Chicago/Turabian and SBL style manuals.

Entry in an Encyclopedia, Dictionary, or Lexicon

  • A well-known reference work should be cited in the footnote, but doesn't need to be cited in the Bibliography.
  • Reference works from a specialized reference work will need to be cited in both Bibliography and footnotes.
  • Signed entries in a dictionary, encyclopedia, or lexicon should be cited just as a chapter in a book. Signed entries often place the author's name at the end of the article.
  • If a work is multivolume, add the volume number just before page numbers, separated by a colon and a space.
