Guide to effectively using library resources and services at HIU.

Library Instruction for your Students

The HIU librarians provide all kinds of library instruction in various formats. Let's see what works for you.

Library Instruction Services

Embedded Instruction

Beyond the one-shot librarian visit, you can "embed" library instruction into your course in a variety of ways. You choose what works for you:

Level One: Hugh & Hazel Darling Library and Ask a Librarian links
Every Canvas course includes the Library course menu link and the Ask a Librarian course menu link. The Library link provides direct access to our Library homepage and online databases where many ebooks and journal articles can be accessed. The Ask a Librarian link provides students with 24/7 access to our LibAnswer FAQ system and the option to submit questions to the HIU Librarians. Submitted questions are generally answered within 24 hours.

Level Two: Course menu link to a specialized research guide
Specialized research guides can assist students' research by focusing on the unique topics and resources your research assignments demand. A simple link in your Canvas course can direct students to the specialized Research Guide. See what Research Guides we already have or ask us about options for collaboration on building a Research Guide for your assignments.

Level Three: Library tutorials in course content
The Library is always working on new online research tutorials. See what we already have on the HIU Library YouTube channel or contact us for more details and information on custom tutorials for your course.

Level Four: Discussion board thread for questions and conversation
If you use your Canvas discussion board threads for students' questions, a designated research help thread may be just what you need. Contact us to discuss adding a librarian to your course. We will monitor the discussion thread and answer library research questions as they arise.

Level Five: Recorded instruction sessions in Canvas
Contact us if you are interested in having a Librarian speak directly to your students about research via a prerecorded session.

Level Six: Assignments in partnership with librarians
Many in-depth research assignments require multiple steps to create that final product. You can collaborate with a Librarian to develop relevant, foundational assignments to assist students in the research process. You can also add a Librarian to your course and we will work with you to develop meaningful assignments and provide feedback for students as they progress through the research process.

Contact us to make arrangements.

Contact Jennifer Rich or Steve Jung, at (714) 879-3901 ext. 1234 or email [email protected] to discuss what Embedded Library Instruction options will work in your course. Please allow 6 weeks for customized options.

Reserve the Information Commons (IC) for your Class

The Information Commons, located on the 2nd floor of the Darling Library, is a research center and computer lab. Reserve the Information Commons with or without a librarian present to provide assistance.*

Contact a librarian, at [email protected] or call (714) 879-3901, ext. 1234 to reserve the IC for class use. Please make arrangements at least one week ahead.

*The Information Commons is the only computer lab with printing services available for students on campus and must be used sparingly for group purposes. It is not conducive for lecture type teaching situations since it is an open area with other students working and studying. It is most suited to guided library research.
