Snezek Library Leadership Institute: FAQs

Information about the CCCU Snezek Library Leadership Institute.

What is the Snezek?

The Snezek Library Leadership Institute is an annual seminar style conference for library deans and directors primarily from CCCU institutions. Attendance is intentionally kept at a maximum of about 25 participants to provide opportunity for relationship building. Participants come prepared having read required readings in order to facilitate meaningful discussions. It is intended to be a safe environment where authentic sharing is encouraged and kept confidential. "What is said at the Snezek, stays at the Snezek."

When and where is it held?

The Snezek is typically held over three days in mid-July at a different CCCU institution.

How long does it last?

There is a common schedule which starts with check in from 1pm to 5pm on Wednesday followed by dinner together, an opening/keynote address, and a tour of the host library. Thursday is full of sessions and usually a local excursion, ending with a nice dinner. Friday continues with sessions and ends with a final unstructured debriefing meeting before departure at about 3:00pm. See a detailed schedule on the Welcome page.

What is its philosophy?

The seminar will provide a forum in which library directors from Christian colleges and universities sharing similar values, priorities, and academic programs gather to reflect and deliberate concertedly upon key library and information issues...  It seeks to stimulate collegial relations in order to enrich professional leadership and practice and also collectively to serve the institutions that are represented. (Dan Bowell, July 2006. Rationale for the Institute.)

Who is it for?

Library deans and directors from Christian colleges and universities.

Who’s who? How is leadership structured?

There is an Executive Team made up of the current chair, past chair, and the chair elect -- each volunteer to serve one year in these capacities.

The Planning Committee includes the Host institution library director/dean the Executive Committee and other past participants.

The names of the current Executive and Planning Committees are posted on the Upcoming Events page. Previous committee members are listed on Past Events pages.

How much does it cost?

Registration costs vary depending on factors such as whether you stay on the host campus during the conference. See the link to the registration page for the upcoming event .

Who sponsors it?

The CCCU processes registration. Other sponsors are listed on the CCCU.org website.

How can I get involved?

Register for the next scheduled institute.

Is there a membership requirement?

No. Although it is designed for library leaders from CCCU institutions, participants are not required to be employed by CCCU member institutions.

Are there bylaws?

No. The Snezek Library Leadership Institute is an annual conference. There is no specific membership requirement, no bylaws, and membership dues. However, there are expectations of behavior and privacy. "What is said at the Snezek, stays at the Snezek."

Are there dues?

No. But there is a cost for registration for the annual institute (a.k.a., conference, seminar) and optional related expenses (such as food and lodging). See registration information on the Welcome page of this guide.

How can I contact someone?

See the Welcome page for information on who to contact for questions and listserv sign up.

Is there a Listserv?

See the Welcome page.

Why is it called "Snezek"?

Originally, initiated as a seminar that was held at Taylor University for library directors in 2004, the institute was named for P. Paul Snezek to "recognize his specific contributions through mentoring and encouragement". P. Paul Snezek was the Associate Professor of Learning Resources at Wheaton College and had directly mentored five of seventeen CCCU library deans in attendance. (email from Dan Bowell to P. Paul Snezek, August 24, 2004)

Do I really have to do the required reading?

Yes. It is a seminar format in which all participants are invited and encouraged to contribute to the discussions. The presenters only recommend readings that will help you meaningfully engage in the topics - even if you don't have a lot to say.

What is the difference between the Snezek Institute and the Council for Library Leadership?

The Snezek is an annual event sponsored and supported by the CCCU. The Council for Library Leadership is part of the CCCU structure of councils. The Council may include members of the Snezek Planning or Executive Committee but does not directly support or sponsor the Snezek event. The Snezek may reinforce and inform best practices fostered by the Council.
