Sport Psychology

Sports Psychology or mental training teaches effective mental skills to athletes and coaches to improve performance and consistency in sports. The goal of mental game coaching is to help athletes and teams overcome negative mindsets and beliefs and use mental toughness training skills and peak performance strategies to perform well in competition.

I’m Dean Hebert. Everyone calls me Coach Dean. I’m a performance psychology coach, consultant, author and speaker. I work with athletes, parents, coaches, and teams as well as work teams to get the most out of individuals and teams. Beyond my academic post-graduate work in sports psychology - the psychology behind athlete performance – I am a certified Mental Games Coaching Professional (MGCP), nationally certified running coach and certified hypnotherapist.

Society for Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology
Division 47: Society for Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology brings together psychologists, as well as exercise and sport scientists, interested in research, teaching and service in this area. APA Running Psychologists is an affiliated group of Division 47. The division currently has committees on diversity issues and education and training. The division sponsors preconvention workshops at the APA Annual Convention. The Exercise and Sport Psychology Newsletter is published three times a year.

SCAPPS has as its main objectives the following:

- To promote the study of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Motor Control, Motor Learning, and Motor Development in Canada.
- To encourage the exchange of views and scientific information in the fields related to psychomotor learning and sport psychology.

The International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) is a multidisciplinary society devoted to promoting research, practice, and development in sport psychology throughout the world. The Society endeavors to foster peace and understanding among people from all countries. Members of the Society include researchers, psychologists, educators, coaches, administrators, students, and athletes interested in sports psychology.

The purpose of NASPSPA is to develop and advance the study of Motor Behavior (development, learning, and control) and Sport and Exercise Psychology.
Membership in NASPSPA is open to anyone who is interested in Motor Behavior and/or Sport and Exercise Psychology and who pays their annual membership dues. NASPSPA has approximately 400 members (most are from Canada and the United States, but with representation worldwide). Approximately 50% of the members are graduate students in the field of Kinesiology.
